SMM1, March 2: according to the latest news, heavy rain in Jakarta, Indonesia, on New year's Eve, resulting in sudden floods and landslides, the death toll increased to at least 21 people. Heavy rains from the evening of December 31 last year to the morning of the first day of the New year caused severe floods. More than 19000 people have been evacuated to temporary shelters and hundreds of local areas have lost power, possibly the worst flooding in Jakarta in nearly seven years.

It is reported that many roads in Jakarta are flooded and vehicles are impassable. Rail traffic has also been affected, with parts of the railway flooded in Greater Jakarta and a number of train services disrupted. According to Indonesian Anti-disaster Agency officials, the water level in downtown Jakarta is between 30 cm and 70 cm, with some areas as high as 120 cm. Jakarta's Halim airport has been temporarily closed since 00:30 on January 1. Flights in and out of Sukarno Hada International Airport were not affected, but express trains at the airport were suspended.

Many people were evacuated in waist-deep water. Disaster response departments at all levels have organized a number of rescue teams to use kayaks to rescue victims besieged by floods and relocate them to temporary disaster relief sites. Indonesian President Joko has instructed agencies to cooperate fully to ensure the safety of the affected population while resuming the operation of major infrastructure and airports as soon as possible. The Indonesian Meteorological Bureau predicted that the rain is expected to last for three days.

The rainy season in Indonesia begins in late November and Jakarta is often hit by floods during the rainy season. Indonesia has entered a rainy season that will last for months.
